The Food in Turkey by Kayley

The food we’ve tried in Turkey was really good and the kebabs were a bit of a disappointment. Also, Turkey had lots of Italian food which I really like.
thats me at a restaurant on our last night in Turkey

We’ve tried kebabs in Turkey and the street kebabs are the best. One restaurant put French fries in the kebabs instead of the meat. Mommy was almost freaking out about that. Unlike the kebabs in New Zealand, the kebabs were long and thin and most didn’t have any sauces. And if the kebabs had any sauce, there wasn’t much. The kebabs weren’t as good as the ones in New Zealand, but they weren’t as messy either because there wasn’t as much sauces in them.
I’ve noticed, in Turkey, that the restaurants serve lots of Italian food like pizzas and pastas. Also the restaurants serve lots of dairy products like yogurt or sour cream. Another thing I noticed is that there are lots of sweets with pistachios in them like pistachio chocolate bars and baklava with pistachios on top. Most of the time the pistachio deserts are fun to try but sometimes they taste weird.

The deserts and teas in Turkey that we’ve tried were mostly really good. Sometimes the packaged Turkish delight is good but the stuff daddy bought was all rubbery and not that good. My family and I tried lots of new deserts at our dinner with Gul and Ilter. My favorite desert was the cream caramel but the rice pudding was really good also. In the teas section the apple tea is the best. It’s like apple cider but thinner.  The Turkish tea is kind of biter and not nearly as good as apple tea (in Turkish elma cay).  Over all the deserts and teas in Turkey were delicious.
Yummy food on our last night in Turkey.
My family and I have tried a variety of foods, but I think the food in Turkey is some of the best food we’ve tried so far. But some of the food was a bit of a disappointment like the kebabs. The NZ Turkish kebabs were bigger and some times better that the Turkish kebabs.

  1. Kayley--great post. I found your description of the foods of Turkey really interesting. I was especially interested to learn that the kebobs weren't so great--especially since I think of them as the quintessential Turkish food. Who would have know that you should go to New Zealand for good ones.

I was also surprised and a bit amused to find that Turkey was a great place for Italian food! But not at all surprised that you liked the desserts and that they used a lot of pistachio nuts in everything. Yum.

Wait until you get to Greece. They also have wonderful food. At least I love it. And Ron should know some good, inexpensive restaurants! Sorry we can't join you there. It should be fun--especially with someone else [Ron[ who knows the country to give some guidance. That makes traveling a bit easier.

    love you! bippy
