In Turkey, we went up to a small village in the mountains called Uludag. We wanted to ski, because it is the ski resort that is closest to Istanbul. My dad wanted Mia and I to learn how to snowboard. I was kind of scared, because when my mom learned how to snowboard, she spent most of the time on the ground. I didn’t want to end up like that. But if my dad wants me to learn how to snowboard, then I might as well give it a try. Learning how to snow board is really hard, and I had to have lots of patients and practice to become better at it. I think it will be really fun.
I think that if I keep practicing, then I will get better, and not fall so much. Snowboarding is really hard to learn. After 2 long runs down the slopes, I spent most of the time on my butt or falling onto my butt. But toward the end, I started to get it. I was really proud of myself, because I stayed on my feet for over 10 yards on my second run. I didn’t get a chance to go down the slopes more than 2 times today, but tomorrow I hope to go down a lot so I can get even better. Learning to snow board is really hard, but once I get better, I think that it will be much more fun.
PS- Their are not any pictures of me snowboading yet, sorry!!!

There are some things that I had to do to snowboard properly. I had to master a few techniques. To go forward without falling, I had to lean side to side on the steal edges. I had to do that so the metal stripes are in the snow. I had some problems with that, because when I edged, I went really fast and would fall down.
When I went down my first run, I fell down a lot. My dad told me that by the end of the day, I would be really wet. So I went out there with my hopes not that high. When I got of the chair lift at the top of the mountain, I fell really hard on my knees. Then every time I stopped, I fell down. I lived up to my dad’s expectations. Snowboarding is really hard and to do it requires a lot of practice and patients.

Zander--Sorry I missed the day! But glad you guys had a chance to move on to some serious recreation after all those ruins. I suspect it was a welcome change of pace.
ReplyDeleteDid your Dad tell you that when he was learning to board, he'd head out to the slope with a pillow stuck in the back of his ski pants??? TRUE!!
Snowboarding has always looked to me like a serious balancing act--and from looking, seemed to require moves that might be counter-intuitive until you've boarded a lot. True?? And is it like surfing? Somehow, I'd expect it to be the same balancing issues as surfing and and skateboarding. So, yo've had some practice with the first, but not the second. It doesn't ook at all like skiing to me--so if you learn to ski, that probably gets in the way. How did your second day go??
When I was skiing, snowboarders always scared me to death. Their boards always make a fair amount of noise, so you hear them as they come up behind you. And boarders are usually going FAST and often somewhat out of control. If they whack into you from behind, you've lost both legs! Not good. So, when I'd hear the "crrunnnnch" of a boarder behind me, I'd head for the edge of the trail.
I suspect you are all en route or arriving in Egypt as I write this. Have a wonderful time exploring the pyramids and other stuff. I don't know if the Falluca trip is still on your agenda, but whatever you do, I'm sure it will be interesting. More ruins, but very different from those in Turkey.
Love you and stay safe! bippy
