Istanbul and Bursa have different styles of mosques. All the mosques that I have been to have minarets. Minarets are towers that are on top of mosques. People go on top of them and sing during prayer time. What I have also noticed is that all the mosques have domes. There could be anywhere from 1 to 20 but they all have them. Mosques all have really nice designs, paintings, mosaics, and really fancy alters and statues. In Turkey, there are tons of different types of mosques with all different styles.

My favorite Mosque was the Hagias Sophia because it has a really big elaborate dome. I also like the really small mosques, because they only have one tower, and the inside is usually really ornate. In all the cities in Turkey that I have been to, there have been tons of mosques all over the place. Seeing mosques like the Blue Mosque in Istanbul and the Great Mosque in Bursa made me notice that they don’t build all there mosques the same, and that there are some differences in the Mosques.
Zander--thanks for the descriptions of domes and mosques. I suspect that you've had more than your fill of architecture by this time. I know that your itinerary is one set of buildings or monuments after another. Unfortunately Greece will be even more of that.
ReplyDeleteBut all those old buildings exist in some modern context that is also interesting. Now I'm wondering what about the modern context might strike you as interesting or notable. And how the contexts [life as you encounter it there] differ between India and Egypt, for instance. Are the people and how they seem when you interact with them the same? Different? Are they fun? Serious? Pushy? Not?
And when you get to Greece, I'll be very interested in what you think about how things there are going economically. Greece is facing a huge crisis--which your Dad and Ron can explain. So you may see some of the effects of the problems.
And there may be other ideas you will have about interesting things to write about. Your more recent post about how you are feeling about the trip at this stage is really good and personal and different--and I can hear "your voice" in what you write. That makes it good.
much, much love--bippy
