The Day In and Around the Colosseum by Sarah

Us in front of the Colosseum.
Two days ago, we went to the Colosseum.  It was historic and interesting seeing something  that is a wonder of the world and so old. It is also amazing that the old city that is now in ruins with a re built meeting house.  The site is now a museum for all of the glass  and jewelry that they found in the ruins.

 The family at the Colosseum.
It is so cool how the Colosseum has lasted almost 2000 years of  earth quakes and weather and it is still in good shape. One of the walls is about 50 meters high and none of it except the under ground part is ruined.  It lasted 2000 years and is still standing and will sand for a while more unless someone bombs it or tries to destroy it. At one time, it was used as a fort.  When it was built, it was a stadium for fights between gladiators, animals, and sometimes navy battles.

Me in the Colosseum museum.
The fights with the gladiators and animals were one of the best attractions for the Romans. One festival lasted 3 months and was one of the free events.  About 20,000 people died and about 9,000 animals died for the festival. that is sad to think about.  It was a celebration for the return of the emperor who died some time later. Only men over 14 years old were allowed to go to these events.  The Colosseum seated  around 70,000 people; 60,000 seated and,10,000 people standing.  Under the stage, there were tons of trap doors and lifts so animals and gladiators popped up on stage.  That was high tech back then.

The old city next to the Colosseum  was once the Roman city center.  It was the hill they found Remus and Romulus at when they were babies.  At least that is what I herd. The city was used in the time of Roman empire in 753 BC.and where Remus and Romulus were found with a she wolf. Romulus was the founder of Rome.  The city had lots of passageways and we only walked down some of them.  Because most of the passageways are blocked off due to restoration work.

The day at and around the Colosseum was very amazing and I saw the beauty of the ancient Roman city.

Kayley and I the day after.

  1. Sarah--You're learning a lot of Roman history!! Good job. But killing 200 people a day is a pretty bloody operation. I can't really understand how people think of that as entertainment! Very strange. Would you enjoy going out day after day to watch that kind of slaughter? I think I'd feel even worse about the animals.

By now you are probably wrapping up your stay in Rome and moving on to the north of Italy. I hope it's getting warm and that you enjoy the north--it's a beautiful part of the country.
    much love, bippy
