me with a fire truck passing, people donot get out of there way |
My family landed in Bali really late Monday evening and we had to get to our house. I was really tired and we had not planned a ride to our rental house. When I got through immigration and regrouped with my family, we walked out of the Airport and I knew that we were in trouble. There were Taxi drivers there trying to get us to their car. At the entrance, there was a wall of taxi drivers and chauffeurs screaming out people’s names, which was really confusing. Some people were following us and saying that they had the best price. My dad tried about 5 of them, and then figured out that renting a car would cost more. Plus he didn’t know how to get to the house. We finally found someone that my dad liked that gave us the right price and spoke okay English. So we got into his van. We were squished! I had a ton of bags on my lap and was so tired that I didn’t care. I was so happy to finally do something that would get us closer to our rental, even though I didn’t know what to expect from it.
It was a really interesting ride home. I was always on edge because there are absolutely no rules. And there are no signs. I was so surprised that we hadn’t been hit. Our driver didn’t know where we were going. We had to stop a few times to get directions. My dad kept on muttering about why we aren’t there already. Our driver had to stop to get some more minutes for his phone. I saw a lot of shabby looking shops and an Apple store with a broken glass window. I knew that it was a fake. Our driver kept on calling all of his friends and asking them where our house was. It was really exciting! People on scooters kept passing us and it took us about an hour to get there. I was so surprised that we got there because our car kept going in circles. But we finally got there! I was so happy even though it was not what I expected. But I didn’t care as long as it had enough beds, I was happy.

the really cool tempal that has a really nice gate |
So the first thing we did was find out where we were sleeping. Then I went to bed right away. I ended sleeping on a queen bed with Sarah. But I didn’t care, because I was so tired. I was so happy to sleep comfortably even if it was in my sleeping bag. It was really hot and humid. I didn’t know that there were 2 fans in the room. The next day we figured it out, and I was really mad that we didn’t use it last night, because I was really sweaty. None of that mattered because I was happy that we had finally gotten to Bali, and I couldn’t wait to see Bali during the day time.

Hey Zander,
ReplyDeleteI understand the chaotic shock you had, but you will get used to it and start loving it. I should have advised you guys to go to the taxi window to get a taxi- they have the fairest price, and it's regulated so you don't feel like you've been cheated. Glad you got to sleep in a bed! Enjoy Bali!
Z--So now you've seen Bali by day and I bet you've had some fun. Your entrance into the place sounds so familiar to me--it is disorienting and strange, but all the airport soliciting is good practice for India and probably Egypt, as well.
ReplyDeleteAnd you are definitely right about the traffic. Even when the roads are not so congested, it's difficult to drive because there are such diverse types of things on the road--walkers, ox-carts, bikes, motor bikes, trucks, etc. all going different speeds and in so particular direction. Good call--getting a driver.
Glad that you all have beds and ceiling fans--the fans are great at keeping the mosquitoes at bay.
It was wonderful to see you on skype today!! Have a wonderful Christmas and lots more adventure. much love, bippy
