Before we started the backpack mommy and daddy wanted to go on some walks. Daddy took us to a short walk by a lake and falling in to the lake was a really cool water fall. After the walk daddy bought us a snack at the café. On the way over to the trail head we saw a sign that said The Chasm and mommy wanted to check it out so we went there. After a short walk we came to a bridge with a really awesome and big water fall. Then we drove to the Routeburn trail head to start the track. That night we stayed at a hut by lake a really cold lake.
On the second day we hiked to the Lake McKenzie hut. On the way to the hut we saw two amazing water falls. The first one was about 175meters high? I think. The second waterfall was called Bridal Veil Falls it was kind of anticlimactic. I’ve seen two Bridal Veil Falls in the south island. They looked pretty much the same except the one on the Routeburn track might have been a little taller. Both water falls have three or four bounces and both are split in two.
On the third day we hiked up to Harrison saddle. That was a very long and windy hike. On the way to the Harrison saddle shelter, we crossed some trickles of water and some pretty significant streams. I remember one specific stream that was super clear and deep. Also I remember another one that we had to hop across. That stream was kind of shallow but clear and looked really cold. On the saddle we had lunch and looked at the lake and the mountains. On the mountains there was lots of water running down to the lakes that were in the valleys.
I never knew New Zealand had such beautiful waterfalls. I think that New Zealand is utterly beautiful!
Kayley--nice descriptions! I could almost walk along beside you checking out your waterfalls. They are gorgeous. And I have one more Bridalveil Falls to add to your collection. There's one in Yosemite.
ReplyDeleteWhen we hiked the Milford track w. your Dad, it was raining and there were tons of waterfalls just popping out of the walls of the canyon. It was quite amazing. New Zealand has more than its share, I guess.
Keep up the good posting. We will be following you every step of the way.
Miss you! much love, bippy
