The Routeburn Track by Sarah
I finished hiking the Routeburn Track by hiking 30 km in one day with my family. We were suppose to leave the next day, but there are lots of reasons we left early.
One reason we left a day earlier was because people wanted to take a shower because there were no showers at the huts. Plus Zander felt really dirty because he’s use to taking a shower every day. I think that’s bad, because we go backpacking a lot and I am use to taking a shower every other day. And I feel clean enough.
Another reason we left was because of the weather. It was going to rain the next several days, so we would have to walk in the rain if we stayed. I don’t like hiking in the rain because the trail gets slippery and wet. It’s really easy to slip and fall of a cliff. I don’t want that to happen. So I was glad to leave early.
The third reason we left early is because we didn’t want to stay at the hut with no privacy. I didn’t like the bunkroom because it had lots of mattresses in a row with nothing in-between. Plus there were two sets of bunk beds right next to each other with just a piece of plywood in-between them. I don’t like being close to strangers when I camp.
The main reasons we left the Routeburn Track early were we needed showers, the weather, and the lack of privacy. I thought the Routeburn Track was really pretty, but I didn’t like the huts and was glad to get back to the car.
Way to go Sarah! 30 km in one day is a lot of kilometers. Were you carrying a pack, too? Either way, that's an impressive accomplishment. And from all you said, I can imagine that it was nice to get to the end of the trail, some hot water, some privacy, and no rain. Besides, you had to save your strength for the hikes ahead.
